Ok. So recently, my girlfriend bought a new phone, and she needed a clutch to store it in. Together with her 21892383205 unidentifiable objects. So, being the thrifty, caring and thoughtful boyfriend that I am, I decided to make a leather clutch for her!
This is a really easy to do item, and anybody can do it. I decided to go with some lamb skin this time round, as it is really soft and supple. If you don’t have leather, or lamb skin, any other fabric would do.
Her phone measures 7″ long, so I bought an 8″ zipper to accommodate it. Before we start, we gotta get a template out. This is really easy. For the template, I made it 9″ (1″ longer than the zipper) x 6″
See how it is an inch longer? 9″ x 6″
I then transfer my pattern on to my leather. For this project, you will need 2-pieces of the pattern.
The pieces after it has been cut out.
We then put on double sided tape. I decided to use double-sided tape instead of contact cement, as it is easier to move and straighten. You could go with an iron-on adhesive as well.
Once the tape has been placed, stick the leather on to the zipper.
Using my spring divider, draw out the line where the stitch follows.
We then punch holes. If you own a sewing machine, this part is much redundant. I do prefer a saddle-stitched product though. Even if one of my thread falls loose, the rest will not break apart.
Do it for both sides of the leather/ fabric.
Running my threads through my own concoction of beeswax, and paraffin for a smoother sewing process.
Sew, sew, sew, sew, sew.
Once both sides had been stitched to the zipper. Unzip it and flip it over. Remember, it is very important to unzip before flipping, if not you will have a very difficult time once your project is complete.
Once flipped, continue the process of sewing, and finish stitching the insides. Remember when I said it is open to have your zip open? Yeah. Cause you gotta flip your clutch inside out now.
Ta-dah! There you have it, a completed leather clutch! Added a small tassle to the zipper as well. Should have made it slightly longer.
